Laura Smith

Printmaking

Laura Smith is well known in the islands for her relief prints, which join technical skill and visually expressive subject matter.  She has always been intrigued by printmaking because of its flexibility and opportunity to make more than one.  Her images are built up of layers of colors printed from cherry plywood.  Her current interest is in narrative woodcuts in which clothing serves as a pattern book reflecting life’s experiences.

She has been active in the Hawai’i printmaking community for over 20 years.  In addition to producing expressive and colorful woodcuts, she is the Executive Director of the Honolulu Printmakers and  was one of the co-founders of the Honolulu Printmaking Workshop.  She was the recipient of the prestigious Cox award from the Honolulu Academy of Arts.  Her works are in the collections of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Contemporary Museum and the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.,
