Babs Miyano-Young

Jewelry

Born and raised in Hawaii, Babs’ interest in art began in high school, where she took every art course she could, including jewelry, ceramics, glass blowing, photography, drawing and painting.  She later attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, where she received her BFA in 1982. She is mainly known in Hawai’i for her work in glass and sculpture. A large free-standing outdoor sculpture can be seen at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center. Her work has been displayed in Invitational shows in Paris, Tokyo, Osaka, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tennessee, and Florida, and is in many collections nationally and internationally.

Many of her jewelry designs are collaborative works with her mother, Florence Miyano, who helps her with some of the assembly work. Babs enjoys combining different elements and textures, often using contrasting bead sizes in creating one-of-a-kind necklaces.  Experiencing an increasing dependancy on glasses herself, Babs’ most recent work combines fashion with function, and many of her necklaces are designed to hold a pair of glasses.  Her customers discovered that the longer ones are also great for holding an ID Badge!
